RODENTS: FACTS, IDENTIFICATION & CONTROL
Rodents’ biology and habits can make them challenging to control, and they present a serious menace to your home. If you’re in need of rodent control services, here’s what you should know about these pests:
Rats
Rodent Facts
Rodents are warm-blooded mammals that, like humans, can be found throughout the world. They have oversized front teeth for gnawing and check teeth, which are adapted for chewing. Rodents chew on a variety of items available to them and cause great damage in and around homes. There constant gnawing on house wiring to keep there teeth down can and do cause house fires.
Rodents tend to be rapid breeders. Some species breed year-round, and populations are maintained through constant reproduction. Because of the rodents’ body plan, they are capable of squeezing through spaces that appear to be much too small for them. All such holes should be sealed to prevent entry and re-entry of rodents. A pest control professional should be contacted for assistance.
Rats and mice are both extremely destructive within agricultural communities. A number of species feed on seeds and grains. The feces and urine of some rodents may contaminate surfaces with which they come into contact.
The droppings, saliva and urine of certain rodent species are known to transmit Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). Disturbance of the droppings causes the virus to go airborne in a process known as aerosolization. Deer mice are the most common transmitters of HPS.
Rats can enter a house through the toilet bowl. They only have to swim a short distance and they can do that easily. A shocked family in Brisbane suburb of Hawthorne found a wet rat on the lip of there downstairs toilet.
If a rodent can push its head through a hole, the rest of their body is flexible enough for there body to pass through. Rats and Mice have vertebrae, but are muscularly flexible as an adaptation that enables them to squeeze into and through tight places. A mouse can fit through a gap under a door just 6mm wide or through a hole 16mm diameter { roughly the size of your little finger } . A Rat can squeeze through a gap just 12mm wide and a hole about the size of your thumb.
MICE FACTS:
House mice, like other rodents, don't vomit and they can produce more than 1000 micro droplets of urine every day. Even the smallest amount urine is capable of triggering allergies in humans, especially children whose immune systems are still developing. The house mouse is the most common of all rodent pests in most parts of the world - probably because a female house mouse can give birth to a dozen babies every 3 weeks and start breeding at the age of 1 month old.
